“Momma,” my daughter proclaimed earlier this spring. “I want to host a carnival this summer.”
While others might have swept the idea under the rug as pure silliness, I chose to let her run with it.
For I knew that her desire to host a fun summer event stemmed from her giving nature and her wanting to bring happiness to those she loves. Its part of what make my Miss Monkey so very special and the quality I most admire about her.
The planning was months in the making. Full of lists...of invitees and games...of prizes and decor...of menus and signs...and so much more.
As a frequent event planner myself, I took tremendous pride in the detail she had in planning her first special event. She immersed herself in every element, from hand addressing the invitations and calculating how many prizes she’d need to researching funnel cake recipes and decorating booth signs. Everything was done to her specifications, because planning is half the fun.
Like any good event planner, she sent her invitations out weeks in advance. Responses were slow at first, but with every new “YES” RSVP, her smile broadened. At the end, she had a dozen friends and family attending. And she was tickled pink.
The morning of the carnival went fast and furious (perhaps we could have aided ourselves with a little earlier start to our day). Funnel cake batter and fresh lemonade was made. Tables, games and decor were setup. Water balloons were filled (it was going to be sweltering 95 degrees after all).
When her guests arrived they enjoyed a picnic of carnival food...hamburgers, hotdogs, fries and hand-squeezed lemonade. After a quick trip inside to cool off, it was back outside for Miss Monkey’s carnival fun. And the fun ensued.
In addition to being the “chef” for the event, I was recruited to be one of Miss Monkey’s “carnival workers” and ran the ring toss game. Needless to say, the event flew by and if I could have changed one thing it would have been to have had a few extra helpers so I could have documented her first event a little better.
We celebrated her success later that night...with a fresh batch of funnel cakes.
Bravo my sweet little angel girl. You put on one fabulous party. And I am so proud of you.
